The Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office was founded in 1837 and is the largest law enforcement agency in Fort Bend County—the most diverse county in Texas. The FBCSO has over 800 employees, including 565 sworn peace officers and 25 reserve deputies dedicated to protecting and serving nearly 900,000 Fort Bend County residents. Among the 10 fastest-growing counties in the nation, Fort Bend covers 885 square miles and includes 21 unincorporated communities. Fort Bend County also includes 16 incorporated municipalities, including Sugar Land, Katy, Missouri City, Richmond, Rosenberg, and Stafford.

The FBCSO oversees the Fort Bend County Jail which is U.S. Department of Justice certified detention center compliant with the Prison Rape Elimination Act—the first jail in the State of Texas to earn this certification. The jail holds a total of 1,783 beds and a holding cell capacity of 90 with an average daily population of approximately 727 individuals. The jail houses inmates from Fort Bend County and other counties through housing contracts to assist their law enforcement agencies with the care, custody, and control of their inmates.

The Sheriff’s Office also operates the Gus George Law Enforcement Academy which was established in 2009 and is a regional law enforcement academy certified by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE). The mission of the regional academy is to provide mandated and specialized continuing education and training courses for current and future peace officers with the FBCSO as well as officers, jailers, and telecommunicators from within the Houston-Galveston Area Council region and Texas.
