Commitment

By departmental policy, a Reserve Deputy must be available to perform a minimum of 16 hours of duty assignments each month and attend a monthly reserve meeting when scheduled. Reserve Deputies also must pass annual firearms qualifications, maintain their Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) certification and can be called for special assignments or emergencies. Many Reserve Deputies volunteer much more than the required minimum time.

What are the requirements to be a Reserve Deputy Sheriff?

All Reserve Deputies with the Fort Bend Sheriff’s Office must be certified by TCOLE; thus, Reserve Deputies are “peace officers,” have the same powers of arrest as full-time deputies and are required by law to meet the same hiring, background, medical and psychological standards as full-time deputies.

We welcome applicants who show a commitment to serving Fort Bend County, high levels of maturity, and a proven track record of excellence, either in law enforcement or another endeavor; however, we need to point out that the application process is thorough and will include long documentation, testing, and a full background investigation, identical to the testing and background procedures for a full-time deputy hire. If you do not meet the basic qualifications for appointment as a Texas peace officer, of if you have not graduated from a peace officer academy (and thus either are licensed or are able to be licensed by TCOLE), you are not qualified to serve as a Reserve Deputy.
