The bike medic team consists of twenty EMS cyclists. Trained by the International Police Mountain Bike Association (IPMBA), the team provides emergency medical care within crowded venues, festivals, fairs and during parades where access by vehicle is limited or impossible. EMS cyclists use mountain bikes to carry over thirty pounds of equipment in bags called panniers. The teams practice with low speed technical skills such as maneuvering through crowds, hopping curbs, ascending and descending stairs, as well as open road skills. EMS bike teams also perform the vital role of community outreach by educating children and parents of the importance of helmets, knowing the rules of the road and proper bike maintenance. The bicycle safety brochure covers rules of the road, correct helmet wearing technique and much more.
